My telegram No. 126 of the 29th July.

Foreign Office, August 7, 1909.

The British group have sent a telegram to Mr. Hillier to the following effect :--- The direct intervention of the United States Government has led to the abandon- ment of the informal negotiations recently in progress here for the purpose of meeting the American claim. The group have therefore no objection to offer to the proposal that the President of the Wai-wu Pu should intervene in the manner indicated in the telegram from Peking of the 22nd ultimo.
